A letter from Kanata Food Cupboard’s incoming Board Chair

I am honoured to be joining the Board of Directors of Kanata Food Cupboard as the new Board Chair.

Throughout my volunteer work over the past 11 years in the Not for Profit Food Insecurity Sector, I have seen how access to food, when grounded in dignity and choice, can strengthen individuals, families, and entire neighbourhoods. I am deeply aligned with the Kanata Food Cupboard’s vision of a resilient community where people are supported not only in times of need, but in their ability to thrive.

In my previous board leadership roles, I have focused on strengthening governance, supporting staff and volunteers, building sustainable funding, and advancing food programs that centre dignity, cultural relevance, and community connection. I believe strongly in listening to those we serve, valuing the contributions of volunteers, and ensuring organizations are well governed so they can remain responsive and resilient over the long term.

What drew me to the Kanata Food Cupboard is its commitment to neighbours, its strong community partnerships, and its clear focus on meeting people where they are, with compassion, empathy and respect. I am excited to contribute my experience in strategic planning, fundraising, and organizational leadership in support of the important work already underway.

I look forward to working alongside fellow board members, staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners to help strengthen a Kanata where individuals and families have access to the resources they need to live healthy, dignified, and connected lives.

Thank you for welcoming me into this community.

Deborah (Deb) Abbott
Chair, Board of Directors, Kanata Food Cupboard
